Earthquake M 6.7 Southeast Maluku, BMKG: Triggered By Deformation Of Banda Plates, No Tsunami Potential

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the 6.7 magnitude earthquake (M) that rocked the Southeast Maluku region on Monday afternoon did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.

Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center Daryono in Jakarta, Monday, said that the earthquake was caused by deformation of the Banda plate shear mechanism or strike-slip.

The epicenter of the earthquake was analyzed in detail in the West Southeast Maluku Sea with a depth of 98 kilometers at 12:49 WIB.

The earthquake had caused shocks that were felt for a while in the Saumlaki area with an intensity scale of IV-V MMI and in the Dobo area with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI.

Daryono added that after the earthquake the sea level anomaly had not been detected.

"After the Banda Mag M 6.7 Tide Gauge DKKMI (BIG) earthquake, no sea level anomalies have been detected. It seems safe that there will be no tsunamis," said Daryono, quoted by Antara.
