JAKARTA - The United Nations Aid and Work Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) is concerned about the condition of children in the Gaza Strip, while the number of students who have died since the latest conflict in the Palestinian enclave has reached 17,000.

In a post on X, the UN agency added: "Children are half of Gaza's population, and their lives are colored by war and destruction," UNRWA wrote in a post on X, as reported by WAFA July 9.

UNRWA further explained that children spend their time outside of class, are forced to leave their homes repeatedly, and almost have nothing to eat with.

"Get out of class. Forced to run away. Almost didn't eat," said the UN agency.

The agency also noted that "there are one million children in Gaza."

UNRWA again stressed the need for an urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza, underscoring peace is essential not only for children but also for a better future for the entire region.

For the second year in a row, children were not given the opportunity to go to school because Israeli forces had destroyed most educational institutions, and the rest had been converted into shelters for refugee families.

Separately, the Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education reported that since the onset of Israeli aggression in Gaza and the West Bank on October 7, 2023, a total of 18,243 students have been killed and 31,643 others injured.

According to a ministry statement on Tuesday, more than 17,175 students were killed and 26,264 others injured in Gaza, while 140 students were killed and 927 others injured in the West Bank, with an additional 768 students detained.
