JAKARTA - Minister of Culture (Menbud) Fadli Zon emphasized the importance of writing national history as a way to rediscover national identity. This was conveyed in the National Seminar of the Association of Historical Education Programs in Indonesia (P3SI) at the Raden Dewi Sartika Building, Jakarta State University (UNJ), Sunday 6 July.
"It's time for us to rewrite the history of Indonesia, not only as a note, but as a basis for forming a generation that understands who he is and where his nation will go," said Fadli Zon in his official statement.
The seminar with the theme "Writing History, Building the Nation: Building the Role of Historical Education in Schools" is considered very relevant to the current national needs. Fadli emphasized that history is not just memorizing, but a tool to form collective awareness and national identity.
According to him, Indonesia still has great homework in writing national history systematically, especially after the Reformation era.
He mentioned that the last Indonesian National History book was compiled in the 1970s under the leadership of Soekanto, while Indonesia's work in History published in 2012 did not cover developments from BJ Habibie to Joko Widodo.
"It's time for us to shift to a more Indonesian perspective," he said.
Fadli gave an example of the mention of "polilonil actions" by the Dutch in military aggression as a form of false narrative and away from the reality of Indonesia. He also called for the need to re-inventing Indonesian identity, namely rediscovering the nation's identity through writing history based on Indonesia's own character and experience.
P3SI Chairman Zulkarnain added that the fourth P3SI congress was a crucial momentum to strengthen communication and cooperation between historical education study programs in Indonesia. This forum is an important means to strengthen the position of historical education in the national education system," he said.
