JAKARTA - President Donald Trump on Monday signed a memorandum imposing the United States' hardline policy on Cuba, canceling the measures taken by former President Joe Biden, the White House said.
The directive will impose a legal ban on US tourism to Cuba while supporting the country's economic embargo, the White House said in a fact sheet.
The new memorandum "enforces a legal ban on US tourism to Cuba and ensures compliance through routine audits and mandatory records of all travel-related transactions for at least five years," the White House fact sheet said.
Although Americans cannot visit Cuba for holidays, travel has been allowed for activities including educational or humanitarian travel.
As one of his first actions after returning to office in January, President Trump, who is a strong critic of Cuba, withdrew President Biden's administration's decision to remove the country from the list of US terrorism sponsor countries.
Not only that, but he has also restricted some people from Cuba.
Based on Monday's memorandum, President Trump renewed the ban on direct or indirect financial transactions with entities controlled by the Cuban military, such as the Groupo de Administracion Empresarial SA and its affiliates, with the exception for transactions that advance US policy objectives or support the Cuban people.
President Biden has revoked President Trump's 2017 order regarding restrictions on financial transactions with several Cuban entities linked to the military and government.
The memorandum also supports Cuban economic embargoes and oppose calls in the United Nations and other international forums to end it, the fact sheet said.
