JAKARTA - A total of 1,573 pregnant cows from Australia arrived in Indonesia in the last two days. The presence of these thousands of cows has become a breath of fresh air for local breeders as well as a strategic step to strengthen national milk production.
The Director General of Animal Husbandry and Animal Health of the Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan), Agung Suganda, said that the arrival of these imported cows was part of an effort to accelerate the increase in the population of domestic dairy cows.
"In two days, 1,573 flowering cows were brought in from Australia to strengthen the population and support the productivity of local breeders in a sustainable manner," Agung said when confirmed in Jakarta, Antara, Sunday, June 29.
Of the total 1,088 cows that entered, 1,088 arrived at Tanjung Tembaga Port, Probolinggo, on Saturday, facilitated by PT Santosa Agrindo Lestari (Santori), a subsidiary of JAPFA.
This process also involves a number of other companies such as PT Greenfields Dairy Indonesia, PT Karya Suci Pratama, PT Irfai Berkah Sejahtera, PT Arla Food, and Suka Makmur Cooperatives.
Meanwhile, the day before, Friday (27/6), as many as 485 dairy cows had entered through Tanjung Wangi Port, Banyuwangi, by PT Kironggo Joyo.
"This is part of the National Milk and Meat Production Acceleration Program (P2SDN), which targets an increase in dairy cattle population by up to 1 million heads by 2029," said Agung.
This step, continued Agung, also supports government priority programs, one of which is Free Nutrition Food, which requires a large supply of milk.
Currently, the production of Domestic Fresh Milk (SSDN) is only able to meet around 21 percent of the national demand of 4.6 million tons per year.
"The presence of imported cattle is expected to increase the capacity of local breeders and encourage the independence of domestic milk production," he added.
Director of Animal Health of the Directorate General of PKH, Imron Suandy, confirmed that all cows had gone through strict examinations since before departing from Australia until arriving in Indonesia.
"We are working with the Indonesian Quarantine Agency to take comprehensive quarantine and health checks. This is part of the commitment to maintain animal health and ensure food safety," said Imron.
