JAKARTA - The United States Embassy in Qatar issued a warning to Americans in the Gulf nation to "protect on-site" as tensions in the region escalated.

"As a form of caution, we recommend Americans to take shelter on the spot until further notice," the embassy website said.

There was no further explanation regarding the warning.

The warning comes amid fears the conflict between Iran and Israel will spread to the region.

There are also concerns Iran may target an American base in the Middle East after the US attacked Iran's nuclear facilities on Sunday.

A warning from the embassy last week urged its personnel and Americans in Qatar to "enhanced vigilance."

Qatar is the Gulf Arab state with the most formal security ties with the US.

Qatar hosted the largest US military installation in the Middle East at the "very necessary" Al Udeid Air Base for US military operations in the region.

Last year, the US quietly reached an agreement to extend its military presence at a large base in Qatar for another 10 years.

Amerika juga mengubah perjanjian kerja sama pertahanan tahun 1992 dengan Doha, yang dimaksud untuk lebih memperkuat kemitraan keamanan mereka.
