JAKARTA - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono hopes Iran and Israel will be able to exercise restraint when the two countries have been involved in escalation since last week and continue to attack each other.
Israel and Iran continued to attack each other on Monday, causing damage and casualties in both sides of the country that has long been in tensions in the region.
"We hope that this tension can be resolved soon, each party will hold back," said Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono to reporters in Singapore, Monday, June 16.
"Because frankly this (conflict) will worsen the situation in the region," he added.
Foreign Minister Sugiono added that tensions between Israel and Iran are likely to be one of the agendas discussed at a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of Organizations for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) which is planned to be held in Istanbul, Turkey on June 21-22.
Last week, Foreign Minister Sugiono said Indonesia would monitor developments in the situation and hoped that the worst would not happen, after condemning the escalation that occurred after Israel's attack on Iran.
"Of course I will have a lot of implications in the sense that if all parties cannot hold back, it will worsen the situation," he said after receiving an honorary visit from New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Friday.
