JAKARTA - South Korean President Lee Jae-myung promised to seek to restore dialogue channels suspended with North Korea immediately, aimed at easing military tensions and building peace between the two Koreas.

President Lee conveyed the message on his Facebook account to mark the 25th anniversary of the June 15 Declaration, which was signed by former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung and former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il during their 2000 summit.

"To ease military tensions and foster a peaceful atmosphere, I will restore the crisis management system, starting with the restoration of suspended dialogue channels between the South and North," President Lee wrote, quoted by The Korea Times June 16.

"The Lee Jae-myung government will end acts of hostility and waste and continue dialogue and cooperation," he added.

President Lee described the 2000 inter-Korean declaration as a starting point for a new era of reconciliation and inter-Korean cooperation between the two Koreas, calling the 2000 summit a moment that shows the potential for mutual prosperity.

He added that history has shown the end of peace could threaten not only the economy and security, but also people's daily lives, stressing "peace is economic."

President Lee promised to make maximum efforts towards peaceful coexistence and mutual prosperity on the peninsula.
