Mount Semeru Erupts Twice, Rainy Vibrations Recorded Up To 4 Hours

The tremors of lava flooding in Mount Semeru in Lumajang Regency, East Java were recorded up to 4 hours on Sunday, June 8, because heavy rains flushed the highest mountain peak area on the island of Java.

"Based on observations, two flood tremors were recorded with an amplitude of 12-30 mm with an earthquake length of 1,920 to 14,400 seconds," said Mount Semeru Observation Post Officer Ghufron Alwi, quoted by ANTARA, Monday 9 June.

During the 24-hour earthquake observation period on Sunday (8/6), Mount Semeru recorded 38 eruption/eruption earthquakes with an amplitude of 10-22 mm and an earthquake length of 67-160 seconds, four earthquake gusts with an amplitude of 4-8 mm and a long earthquake of 33-43 seconds.

"The activity of Mount Semeru also experienced three harmonics with an amplitude of 5-20 mm and an earthquake duration of 95-117 seconds, as well as three distant tectonic earthquakes with an amplitude of 15-28 mm, S-P 13-53 seconds and an earthquake length of 33-136 seconds," he said.

He said the visual observation of Mount Semeru was covered in 0-II fog until it was covered in 0-III fog. The crater smoke was not observed. Cloudy to rainy weather, weak to moderate winds to the south, west and northwest

The mountain, which has a height of 3,676 meters above sea level (masl), experienced two eruptions on Monday morning, namely 01.05 WIB and 03.29 WIB.

"There was an eruption of Mount Semeru at 01.05 WIB. The visual eruption was not observed, but the eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 116 seconds," he said.

The mountain, which is on the border of Lumajang and Malang Regencies, erupted again at 03.29 WIB and the eruption visual was not observed, but the eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 104 seconds.

Mount Semeru is still on alert or Level II status, so people are prohibited from carrying out any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 km from the summit (the center of the eruption).
