JAKARTA - Member of Commission I DPR RI Junico Siahaan strongly condemns the brutal actions carried out by the Israeli military against the Indonesian Hospital (RS) in Beit Lahiya, North Gaza, Palestine. He asked the Indonesian government to encourage the United Nations (UN) to take firm steps against Israel.

According to Junico, the Israeli attack on RS RI in Gaza is an act that cannot be justified, and violates international humanitarian law and basic human principles.

"Israel's actions reflect violations of international law and the role of countries serving humanity," said Junico, Sunday, June 8.

"Not only buildings were attacked, but also the existence of Indonesia as a nation that upholds cross-border humanitarian solidarity," he continued.

As is known, the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza was badly damaged and forced to close due to the siege and attack of the Israeli army on May 18, 2025. The MER-C (Medical Emergency Rescue Committee) said that the Israeli attack not only targeted Indonesian hospitals, but also Wisma Joserizal, which is located in Beit Lahia.

The Israeli attack caused structural damage to Indonesian hospitals and weakened health services. MER-C explained that the condition of the hospital was concerning as a result of the Israeli attack.

The MER-C also reported that Israeli troops had forcibly vacated the hospital and had destroyed the area around the hospital first and razed it to the ground. Before being vacated, local MER-C medical staff and volunteers remained afloat even though the Israeli military continued to escalate attacks and sieges since May 18.

Junico said the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza was built from donations from the Indonesian people and managed by volunteers from the MER-C. He called the existence of Indonesian hospitals in Gaza a real symbol of humanitarian concern and commitment to the struggle of the Palestinian people.

"For more than two weeks since May 18, this hospital has continued to provide services amid siege without access to food, clean water, and electricity. This condition should make the location a safe zone," said Junico.

"In fact, the hospital was the target of the attack. The hospital was attacked, volunteers were forced out, and the world was again witnessing war crimes without consequences," he continued.

The man who is familiarly called Nico Siahaan emphasized that this incident was not just an ordinary humanitarian tragedy, but an act that was structured and could be classified as a war crime. Because the form of attack by Israel against medical facilities constitutes a serious violation of the Geneva Convention.

Nico also asked the Indonesian government to immediately take firm steps in the international realm against Israel's actions. Among them are seeking active support in the UN Security Council, the International Criminal Court (ICC), and the UN General Assembly for investigation and prosecution of Israel's crimes.

According to Nico, Indonesia could encourage the formation of an independent international investigation team under the UN mandate to investigate the destruction of civilian facilities, including Indonesian hospitals.

In addition, Indonesia must continue to mobilize regional coordination, especially through the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to build real pressure on Israel through military and economic sanctions.

"This includes ensuring the continuity of diplomatic and humanitarian communication with Indonesian humanitarian volunteers and networks in Gaza," said Nico.

Furthermore, the member of the House of Representatives' Foreign Relations Commission called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) and related intelligence agencies to immediately activate special diplomatic channels and coordinate with international humanitarian organizations. This, said Nico, is to prevent the lack of information that risks increasing impunity.

"The destruction of Indonesian hospitals is not just a Palestinian issue, this is an attack on Indonesia's role on the world humanitarian stage. Silence is a betrayal of the constitutional mandate and conscience of the nation," said the legislator from the West Java I electoral district.

Nico also ensured that Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives, one of whose main functions in charge of foreign affairs, would continue to oversee the steps taken by the Government against Israel's actions.

"Including the option of increasing diplomatic pressure on countries that continue to allow Israel to act beyond legal limits," Nico concluded.
