Mount Semeru Erupts Again, Eruption Reaches 1,200 Meters Above The Peak

LUMAJANG Mount Semeru, which is located on the border of Lumajang and Malang Regencies, East Java, erupted again on Wednesday morning, May 28, with an eruptive column height of about 1,200 meters above the peak or about 4,876 meters above sea level (masl).

"There was an eruption of Mount Semeru at 06.12 WIB with an eruption column height of approximately 1,200 meters above the peak," said Mount Semeru Observation Post Officer, Liswanto, in his official report.

Volcanic ash that was vomited was observed to be white to gray with moderate intensity and pointing to the northeast. This eruption became the third since midnight, after the previous two eruptions occurred at 00.59 WIB (6000 meters column height) and at 02.37 WIB (500 meters column height).

Mount Semeru, which has a height of 3,676 meters above sea level, is still on Alert status (Level II). The Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) provides several important appeals to the public:

1. Not doing activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan as far as 8 km from the summit.

2. Beyond that distance, it is prohibited to move within 500 meters of the riverbank along Besuk Kobokan, because the potential danger of hot clouds and lava flows can reach up to 13 km from the summit.

3. Prohibited from being within a radius of 3 km from the crater/peak of Mount Semeru, because it is at risk of being hit by incandescent stones.

4. Beware of potential hot clouds of avalanches, lava, and lava rain along rivers that originate from the summit, especially Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat, including the tributaries.

PVMBG urges local residents to continue to follow official information, and immediately evacuate to a safe place in the event of a significant increase in volcanic activity.
