JAKARTA - President Vladimir Putin said Russia supported the peaceful settlement of Ukraine's crisis after holding telephone talks with US President Donald Trump on Monday.
In a statement to reporters after a phone call, President Putin said talks with President Trump lasted more than two hours substantively and honestly.
"I believe this is a very productive exchange of opinion," President Putin was quoted as saying on the Kremlin website, May 20.
President Putin thanked President Trump for his support from the United States in facilitating the resumption of Russian-Ukraine talks to reach a peace agreement.
The Kremlin's leader said the President of the United States conveyed his position on stopping hostilities and the prospect of a ceasefire.
"Meanwhile, I emphasize Russia also supports resolving the Ukraine crisis peacefully. What we need now is to identify the most effective ways to achieve peace," he said.
"We agree with the President of the United States that Russia will propose and be ready to cooperate with the Ukrainian side in drafting a memorandum of understanding regarding possible peace agreements in the future," President Putin added.
He further said it would include depictions of various provisions, such as settlement principles, a timeframe for possible peace deals, and other matters, including a temporary ceasefire, if necessary agreements were reached.
