LOMBOK A climber from Malaysia with the initials RAG (57) was found dead after falling into a ravine on the Torean hiking trail, Mount Rinjani, West Nusa Tenggara. This incident occurred on Saturday, May 3, and the victim's body was successfully evacuated by the joint SAR team the next day, Sunday, May 4, at around 10.30 WITA.

The victim allegedly slipped and lost balance while crossing a steep, known to be dangerous path. The incident occurred not far from the source of Banyu Urip's spring. At that time, the victim decided to continue the journey alone, while his group members were resting.

The group leader who realized the victim was walking first had time to follow and offer assistance to cross a lane equipped with a safety rope. However, the offer was rejected.

As he was about to go down the steep part, the victim released the handle from the rope and lost his footing. He also fell into a ravine about 80 meters deep on the right side of the hiking trail.

Head of the Mataram SAR Office, Muhamad Hariyadi, said the evacuation process was quite challenging due to extreme terrain conditions.

"The victim was found at a depth of about 80 meters. The evacuation was carried out using lifting techniques and strict supervision for the safety of the team," he said in an official statement, Monday, May 5.

Hariyadi added that the evacuation process involved a number of SAR elements from the Mataram area. The appointment of the corpse takes about three and a half hours.

After successfully evacuating, the victim's body was immediately handed over to the family and taken to the Bhayangkara Mataram Hospital.

This tragedy is a reminder of the importance of vigilance while climbing, especially on extreme routes such as Torean. Even though Mount Rinjani is a favorite destination for climbers, safety must still be a priority in every journey.
