KEDIRI - Ministry of Elementary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) officially announced plans to implement coding and artificial intelligence (AI) subjects for the 2025/2026 school year. The plan is to prepare the younger generation for the digital era
Deputy Minister of Basic and Secondary Education (Wamendikdasmen) Fajar Riza Ul Haq conveyed this news while attending tablig akbar and halalbihalal of Muhammadiyah's extended family, Kediri Regency, East Java, Sunday, April 27.
"That's right, for next year, coding and AI will be introduced as selected subjects starting from grade 4 elementary schools," he said.
Fajar explained that the coding and AI subjects are of choice, depending on the readiness of each school and student. The main focus is to equip students with critical thinking skills, numeration, and digital literacy, which are the keys to the success of the modern era.
Currently, according to Fajar, curriculum preparation is almost complete. The official announcement will soon be made by the Minister of Basic and Secondary Education Abdul Mu'ti.
"The nature of the choice depends on the submission of schools that are ready for infrastructure. We have done the mapping, both based on the application and the geographical context of each," he explained.

To support the implementation of this new lesson, existing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) teachers will receive additional training related to coding and AI. With this step, it is hoped that schools can have qualified teaching staff for digital-based materials.
