JAKARTA - The Government of the Republic of Indonesia and the Government of the UK are strengthening bilateral cooperation regarding the handling of climate and environmental issues. The transition of fair energy and carbon problems is the main discussion.
The strengthening of the cooperation was marked by a meeting between the Minister of Environment (LH)/Head of the Indonesian Environmental Control Agency (BPLH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, and British Climate Minister Kerry McCarthy, according to a statement received in Jakarta on Friday.
"We believe strong international cooperation is key to ensuring an energy transition that does not leave anyone behind," said LH/Head of BPLH Hanif at a meeting held in Jakarta, Thursday (17/4).
On this occasion, the two ministers reiterated the commitment of the two countries to keep the earth's temperature target from exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius according to the Paris Agreement. Indonesia targets emission peaks by 2030 and achieves carbon neutral by 2060 or sooner, with the forestry and energy sector as its main pillar.
The results of the meeting also agreed on a discussion on the High Integrity Carbon Market Opportunity which will be held in May 2025. During the meeting, Indonesia highlighted the importance of strengthening the national carbon market through the Indonesian GRK Emission Reduction Certificate (SPEI), as well as developing a credible and transparent national registry system.
The UK through the PACT UK program expressed support in the form of funding of 2.8 million pounds sterling over the next three years to accelerate the development of cross-sector Indonesia's carbon trade roadmap.

In addition to climate issues, plastic waste management is also an important agenda. Indonesia is facing an increase in the volume of plastic waste in rivers, beaches and seas, especially in tourist areas such as Bali.
Britain supports the renewal of Indonesia's National Action Plan for Plastic Pollution through a partnership with the World Bank, as well as strengthening the Indonesia National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP) platform in handling this problem thoroughly.
The issue of biodiversity is also a concern. Indonesia continues to strengthen the implementation of the Indonesia Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (IBSAP) and encourages the integration of environmental service valuations that consider the value of the carbon economy and biodiversity conservation.
The British government opens opportunities for cooperation in financing biodiversity, strengthening forest and peatland surveillance systems, and sustainable landscape management from upstream to downstream.
The meeting strengthened the plan to update cooperation between the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and the UK ministry of partners as a strategic partner in leading global climate actions that are just, inclusive, and future-oriented.
"Environmental protection is not only about carbon offsets, but also about maintaining the beauty and natural wealth of Indonesia for future generations," said British Climate Minister Kerry McCarthy.
