JAKARTA - The majority of Western Europeans support retaliation for new, higher rates threatened by US President Donald Trump, according to the YouGov EuroTrack survey.

"If the US really charges EU goods, surveys find that the majority support the retaliatory rates against America," the report said, surveying seven countries, namely Britain, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Sweden.

Danish citizens are the most supportive of retaliation with 79 percent, according to the survey.

"In Germany, which is expected to be hit very hard considering the size of their car manufacturing industry, two-thirds support (68 percent)," the report said.

Italy is the country that does not support retaliatory rates at most with 56 percent.

The US rate will have a significant impact on the European economy, according to 60-76 percent of the country surveyed.

Regarding trade with the US to date, about 40-67 percent of Europeans say they consider the EU to be fair to the US, although Trump claims his policies are "unfair".

The US previously announced a 25 percent increase in tariffs for steel, aluminum, cars, and auto parts, with further import duties expected to apply to semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and wood.

Trump threatened to impose a broad tariff on global goods on Wednesday.
