Menbud Calls Many Sites To Palestinian Historical Buildings Destroyed

JAKARTA - Indonesian Minister of Culture (Menbud) Fadli Zon reminded the large number of sites to historic buildings in Palestine that were destroyed by persistent attacks from Israel, as well as emphasizing his support for Palestinian independence.

"Imagine, when we are here preparing to open up, in Palestine our brothers are trapped in colonialism. This destruction has also befallen cultural, artist and cultural sites. Their rights are threatened," explained the Minister of Education through his official statement, Saturday.

He said this while attending the Indonesia with Palestine event 'Ramadan Victory and Solidarity'. The activity, which was attended by Palestinians in Indonesia, took place at Puri Ardhya Garini, Halim Perdana Kusuma, Jakarta, Friday (14/3).

The Minister of Culture explained that UNESCO recorded damage to 83 sites in Palestine since October 7, 2023, including 11 religious sites and 53 historical and/or artistic buildings, three residential objects, eight monuments, one museum, and seven archaeological sites.

This number does not include the uncountable destruction of cultural heritage objects in Palestine.

At the event, Fadli expressed his support for Palestine as an independent country. Menbud explained that Palestinian independence was in accordance with the constitutional mandate that colonialism above the world should be abolished.

"Not to mention the double standards and defamation that are applied in world forums when dealing with the West," he added.

The Indonesian event with Palestine "Ramadhan Victory and Solidarity" was held by the Friendship Foundation and Civilization Studies, attended by the Minister of Culture Fadli Zon, Representative of the Indonesian Ulema Council Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, Deputy Chairperson of the MPR Hidayat Nur Wahid, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Anis Matta, then members of the foundation, NGOs, and Palestinians in Indonesia.

This activity is also a form of Indonesia's commitment to supporting the independence of the Palestinian people and also a reminder of the Palestinian struggle against Israeli occupation.
