JAKARTA - A total of 2.4 tons of salt or NaCl was smeared in Jakarta's skies on the first day of the weather modification operation (OMC) to prevent hydrometeorological disasters such as floods due to high rainfall.

"Today's operating mission has lasted as many as 3 terms with a flight duration of 6 hours and 30 minutes using 2.4 tons of material for the same time as the NaCl," said OMC Jakarta Spokesperson for 2025 Michael Sitanggang as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, March 11.

According to Michael, who is also the Head of the Logistics and Equipment Subgroup of the DKI Jakarta Province Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), his party is trying to reduce the extremity of rain in Jakarta and its surroundings.

On the first day of operation, the naming of NaCl targeted the northwest, the Sunda Strait and the Thousand Islands of DKI Jakarta in Sori 1 and the Java Sea area in Sori 2 and 3.

"We continue to coordinate with various parties so that this operation can be effective in reducing extreme rain in Jakarta and its surroundings," he said.

Michael said coordination was also carried out with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) and the West Java Provincial BPBD which also carried out OMC so that the operation could run in a synergistic and integrated manner.

Acting (Plt) Director of Weather Modification Management of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Budi Harsoyo said the potential for rain cloud growth on March 11, 2025 was observed to be quite significant, with relative humidity (RH) in the 3,000-foot layer still quite high.

The potential for even distribution of rain is expected to occur in the western region of Java Island, especially during the day and night, but it can subside in the afternoon. "In general, the potential for daily rainfall in the next four days is still relatively high," he said.

Budi explained that the OMC Command Post in the DKI Jakarta area will operate from morning to evening.

The implementation of OMC this time was also carried out by BNPB through a post at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base and West Java Province BPBD through a post at Husein Sastranegara Air Base.

"This activity is in collaboration with the Indonesian Air Force (TNI AU) and PT Rekayasa Atmosphere Indonesia (RAI)," he said.
