JAKARTA - Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arrmanatha Nasir, said that Indonesia is committed to encouraging the strengthening of the multilateral system and compliance with International Humanitarian Law (HHI) to support global humanitarian diplomacy.

This was conveyed by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs when receiving a visit from the Head of the Regional Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Indonesia, Vincent Ochilet, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tuesday.

"Indonesia supports the role of ICRC as an institution that is implicit on humanitarian issues, including in the implementation of the ceasefire in Gaza, and the distribution of humanitarian aid for Palestine," said Deputy Foreign Minister Tata, quoted from a statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tuesday, March 11.

On the same occasion, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Tata also expressed his appreciation and support for the cooperation between ICRC and Indonesia at the national level in the promotion of HHI.

This meeting was also used to discuss a number of ICRC cooperation with Indonesia in 2025, including the implementation of the ICRC Annual Briefing with all relevant Ministries/Institutions, and plans for collaboration with the religious community in Indonesia to discuss the relationship between HHI and Islamic values and laws.

The cooperation between ICRC and Indonesia in the distribution of humanitarian aid continues to strengthen. The Head of the ICRC Regional Delegation expressed his appreciation for the cooperation in distributing humanitarian aid to Palestine, Afghanistan and Myanmar through the ICRC in 2024.

Indonesia is reviewing opportunities for cooperation with ICRC for the distribution of humanitarian aid to Palestine in 2025.

In addition to the cooperation between Indonesia and ICRC, the meeting was also used to discuss efforts to strengthen ICRC cooperation with ASEAN in the field of humanitarian assistance and HHI promotion, including through the ASEAN Coordinating Center for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Center).

"Indonesia's support for the implementation of the ICRC humanitarian mandate is in line with the mandate of the Constitution to participate in advancing world peace and security," explained Deputy Foreign Minister Tata.

One of ICRC's efforts at the global level to strengthen HHI is to launch the Global Initiative to Galvanise Political Commitment on International Humanitarian Law in September 2024.

The initiative is aimed at answering various challenges in HHI with the increasing number of HHI violations in various conflict areas, including in Palestine.

Indonesia itself has joined this initiative and will become one of the co-chairs of the working group "Updating Naval Warfare Rules."
