The Search And Rescue (SAR) team managed to evacuate a resident who was dead due to being buried by landslides for hours in Bungbulang District, Garut Regency, West Java.

"The evacuation process has been carried out, the buried victims were found at 23.00 WIB dead after hours of evacuation," said Head of Bungbulang Police, AKP Yusli Yulianto, quoted by ANTARA, Monday, February 24.

He said heavy rains that flushed the southern region were the cause of landslides which then hit houses and residents, Endang alias Jalu (40), in Bekong Cijangkar Village, Bojong Village, Bungbulang District, on Sunday (23/2) at around 18.30 WIB.

The presence of residents who were buried by landslides made his staff together with the TNI, Damkar, Tagana, village officials, and the community carry out search efforts that finally succeeded in evacuating victims and cleaning up landslide material on the road.

"Immediately clean up the landslide material from the road and try to evacuate the victims," he said.

He said that landslides from the cliffs as high as tens of meters were not only hoarding houses and workshop buildings, but also blocking road access in the area.

As a result of the landslide, the access road south of Bungbulang-Garut could not be crossed by two-wheeled or four-wheeled vehicles from both directions.

"As a result of this incident, the traffic flow from Garut to Bungbulang was totally jammed because the road was covered by landslides," he said.

The joint team then tried to clean up landslide material so that road access could be crossed again by motorized vehicles.

He appealed to the public and road users to always be aware of the threat of landslides, especially when it rains with high intensity.

"We urge people who cross this route to be vigilant, especially when it rains, because it is risky for landslides to occur," said the police chief.
