Police Name Truck Driver Who Killed 8 People On Ciawi Toll Road Suspect

Bogor City Police have named the suspect status of Bendi Wijaya, the truck driver who was involved in a fatal accident and killed eight people at Ciawi 2 Toll Gate, Katulampa Village, Bogor City, West Java.

"That's right (the suspect) and has been detained at the Bogor City Police Headquarters Detention Center," said Head of Traffic Unit of Bogor City Police AKP Santi Marintan in Bogor, Antara, Thursday, February 13.

Bendi is subject to Article 311 paragraph 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 of Law Number 22 of 2009 with a maximum imprisonment of 12 years or a maximum fine of Rp. 24 million. This article states that every person who deliberately drives a motorized vehicle in a way or situation that is dangerous for life or goods resulting in the death of another person, shall be punished.

The determination of the suspect's status after Bendi underwent examination as a witness at the Bogor City Police Traffic Unit Office, Jalan Kedunghalang on Tuesday. At that time Bendi's health condition was declared to be improving after being treated at the Ciawi Regional General Hospital (RSUD) due to a brain injury.

Director of Ciawi Hospital, Dr. Fusia Meidiawaty, said that in addition to suffering a brain injury, Bendi, who is a resident of Cicurug District, Sukabumi Regency, also suffered injuries to the eye, so he had to receive treatment from an eye specialist and neuroscientist.

The driver of this deadly truck is one of 11 survivors of the accident at GT Ciawi 2.

Previously, the Head of Bogor City Police, Kombes Eko Prasetyo, explained that the accident on the Bogor Jakarta Toll Road, precisely at GT Ciawi 2, occurred on Tuesday (4/2) at around 23.30 WIB.

The fatal accident that destroyed the toll gate building also involved six units of vehicles, three of which were burned and three others damaged.

At that time the truck with a gallon load drove from Ciawi to Jakarta, then experienced a failed brake right at the toll gate.

"It is suspected that the vehicle experienced a failed brake function (brake failure) and crashed into a series of vehicles that were carrying out transactions (e-tol payment), three vehicles caught fire, three other vehicles were damaged," said Eko.
