JAKARTA - The United States will officially leave the World Health Organization (WHO) on January 22, 2026, the United Nations said on Thursday, after being officially notified of the decision by President Donald Trump.
President Trump is known to have accused the organization of mishandling the pandemic and other international health crises.
Trump announced the move on Monday, hours after he was sworn in for a second term for the next four years.
A day later, the WHO said it regretted the move taken by the organization's main donor country.
"I can confirm that we have now received a US letter regarding the withdrawal from WHO. The letter is dated January 22, 2025. The letter will take effect a year from yesterday, on January 22, 2026," said UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq.
In accordance with the provisions, Trump must give a one-year notification of the US withdrawal from the Geneva-based agency, paying Washington contributions based on a joint resolution of the 1948 US Congress.
The United States has so far been the WHO's biggest financial supporter, accounting for about 18 percent of its overall funding. The WHO's two-year budget, for 2024-2025, reached 6.8 billion US dollars. However, it was not immediately clear how much the US contributed.
