JAKARTA - A Hamas commander reappeared in the northern Gaza Strip even though Israel claimed to have killed him last year.

Activists on Wednesday (22/1) shared video footage of Hussein Fayyadh, a Hamas military wing commander, Qassam Brigade, during an antenna in northern Gaza.

"Gaza has appeared immovable, winning, and with his head held high," Fayyadh told participants in the campaign, according to the footage.

On May 23 last year, Israeli soldiers claimed to have killed Fayyadh in an underground complex in the northern city of Jabalia.

Israel blamed the Hamas commander for rocket attacks during the Israeli genocide war in Gaza and in Israeli settlements near the border with the enclave.

Later on the same day, Israeli soldiers acknowledged that their intelligence information about Fayyadh's death was inaccurate.

The first six weeks of the Gaza ceasefire agreement came into force on January 19, halting the Israeli genocide war that has killed nearly 47,200 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured more than 111,160 since October 7, 2023.

The three-phase ceasefire deal includes a sustainable prisoner swap and calm and aimed at a permanent ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza.

Israeli attacks have left more than 11,000 people missing with widespread damage and a humanitarian crisis that has claimed the lives of many parents and children in one of the worst global humanitarian disasters ever.

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in November last year for Israeli chief authority Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense chief Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel is also facing genocide cases at the International Court of Justice over their war in the area.
