JAKARTA - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he did not support freedom of expression if it was used for extreme right-hand views.

This was in response to Elon Musk's comments that caused a commotion during the Donald Trump campaign.

"We have freedom of opinion in Europe and Germany. Everyone can say what they want, even if they are billionaires. What we don't accept is if this supports the right extreme position," Scholz said in Davos, Switzerland, as reported by Reuters, Tuesday, January 21.

Musk's hand movements during the celebration of President Trump's inauguration attracted an online comparison with Nazi-style respect.

Musk dismissed the criticism as a tiring attack.

"Oaf Schitz is embarrassing," Musk posted on X, his platform, on Tuesday with video clips shared by other users showing Scholz speaking at the World Economic Forum annual meeting at the Swiss resort.

"Schitz" means nothing in German.

Musk previously attacked Scholz in X, calling him a "incompetent person" who had to resign after a deadly attack on the German Christmas market.

He also used a platform previously known as Twitter to show his support for the Alternative far-right party for Germany (AfD) ahead of the election scheduled for next month.

Musk's repeated support for AfD, the party that most supports the Trump administration among German parties, sparked outrage in Berlin, but the German government did not unanimously abandon its platform.

The European Commission previously said it was stepping up its investigation into whether X violated EU regulations on content moderation.

Musk's meeting with AfD leader Alice Weidel for discussions about X this month was overseen by the European Commission to examine the spread of misinformation.
