Sumatran Tiger Enters Labor Camp In Pelalawan

PEKANBARU - Head of Technical Division of the RiauUjang Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA) Holisudin said a Sumatran tiger entered one of the field workers' camps in the Forest Business Entrepreneurship Area (PBPH) of Pelalawan Regency, Riau, on Monday (13/1).

"The incident began when a worker forgot to close the gate of the camp which had been surrounded by a black tarpaulin fence. The Sumatran tiger suddenly entered the camp area through the gap and chased the dog and pet chicken inside the camp," Ujang said as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, January 16.

According to him, the presence of the tiger was immediately known to residents of the camp and had been recorded by several people using gadgets so that the tiger came out through the same door.

After the tiger left, according to him, residents at the location immediately closed the fence and reported this incident to the company. Furthermore, the company immediately reported to the relevant parties and then the company mitigation team came to the location.

"Tiba at the location of the company mitigation team calmed residents, provided counseling and inspected the area around the camp. A trap camera was installed to monitor the presence of tigers, while some members of the team carried out surveillance from the fire tower near the location," he said.

Based on two days of monitoring, the tiger was no longer visible around the camp. The team then evacuated the residents' livestock and appealed to residents not to raise livestock or pets in the camp.

A number of employees, women, and children were moved to permanent camps to ensure their safety. The team also ensured that there would be no more movement of tigers around the site, the activities of workers in Camp returned to normal.

"Now the conditions are conducive, we have asked the permit holders to tighten and control the implementation of SOPs, especially the prohibition of raising livestock," he said.
