JAKARTA - President Director of PT PLN (Persero) Darmawan Prasodjo said PLN currently has provided as many as 616 units of Public Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (SPKLU) spread over 237 locations for electric vehicle drivers in the country.
"The public does not need to worry about the availability of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles to support the ecosisim of electric vehicles," said Darmawan Prasodjo, Antara, Sunday, May 28.
According to Darmawan, the electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia has been increasingly formed. But previously, the SPKLU franchise attracted the interest of mall entrepreneurs, offices, and food stalls wanted to contribute to reducing carbon emissions.
He said turning to electric vehicles is a strategic choice because the transportation sector is one of the main contributors to carbon emissions in Indonesia and now users of electric vehicles are widespread.
"There are more and more electric vehicles in Indonesia that have also become new business fields for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)," he said.
He explained that as an illustration of 1 liter of fuel oil (BBM) is equivalent to 1.5 kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity. The 1 liter carbon emissions equivalent to 2.4 kilograms (kg) of CO2e, while 1.5 kWh of electricity emissions equivalent to 1.5 kg of CO2e.
Moreover, said Darmawan, the electricity provided to charge vehicles will also be cleaner, following the construction of a New Renewable Energy-based generator (EBT).
"In the current condition, using electric vehicles has been able to reduce emissions by more than 35 percent. Along with PLN plants heading to EBT, in the future the emission electric vehicles will be zero," said Darmawan.
Darmawan emphasized that in addition to being environmentally friendly, the advantage of electric vehicles is to be more economical, both in terms of operational and maintenance costs.
As an illustration, a car with a distance of 10 kilometers (km) costs 1 liter of fuel, while an electric car with the same distance costs 1.5 kWh.
"So, assuming an electricity tariff of Rp. 1,699.53 per kWh, it only costs around Rp. 2,500 for electric cars and around Rp. 13 thousand for fuel cars in covering a distance of 10 km. That way, operating costs using electric cars are less than 20 percent of the cost of using fuel cars," said Darmawan.
In addition, maintenance costs for electric cars are more efficient than fuel cars. Among other things, electric cars do not use engine oil, where fuel cars must be replaced every 10 thousand kilo meters at a cost of more than Rp. 1 million.
Darmawan also explained that the use of electric vehicles will be useful for national energy sovereignty, which will reduce fuel imports.
"With the transition from fuel to electricity, there will be a dirty and expensive import-based energy transition to cheap and clean domestic-based energy. So that national energy sovereignty will be stronger," he said.
Regarding charging infrastructure, the public does not need to worry. PLN currently provides 616 SPKLU units spread over 237 locations for electric vehicle drivers in the country.
He mentioned the example of Steven, an owner of the Lombok Gringging Fried Chicken Shop, Surabaya, who has opened the SPKLU since April 2023, it is recorded that 87 vehicles have been charging at his SPKLU.
Steven is the owner of a chicken stall located on the strategic route from Solo to Banyuwangi and is strategically crossed by vehicles. And the results from SPKLU have added new income because SPKLU is a very prospective business opportunity.
