JAKARTA - Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, Mohammad Syahril, said that half of the total 35 case reports in Indonesia were not clinically proven to be mysterious acute hepatitis.

"Out of the 35 cases reported, there are 19 cases (54.2 percent) of patients classified as discharged", said Mohammad Syahril as quoted by Antara, Tuesday, May 24.

Discharged, according to him, is a classification of patients with suspected cases of mysterious acute hepatitis who have met several criteria for other diseases based on the results of pathogen examination.

He explained that the other pathogens found in the 19 patients were positive for Cytomegalovirus (CMV) a group of herpes viruses that can infect and survive in the human body. In addition, positive COVID-19 patients were also detected.

Syahril, who also serves as President Director of RSPI Sulianti Saroso, detailed that 11 patients had confirmed dengue, three patients were infected with bacterial sepsis, two patients had Hepatitis A, and the rest, one patient each had Dilated Cardiomyopathy, drug-induced hepatitis, and leukemia.

Because of this, said Syahril, the suspected cases of mysterious acute hepatitis in Indonesia as of May 23, 2022, 16 cases are remaining, consisting of one probable case and 15 pending classifications.

The pending classification is still waiting for the results of reports of other pathogens from several reference laboratories to detect other possible diseases, such as Hepatitis A, B, C, D, or E.

Meanwhile, efforts have been made by the government in responding to the detection of mysterious acute hepatitis in the country, among others, by issuing Circular Letters of Referral Flow of Sample Examination Specimens to several hospitals.

One of them is by distributing Hepatitis E Reagents to Adam Malik Hospital, Medan, Diagnostic and Research Center for Infectious Diseases FK Unand Padang, Infectious Diseases Hospital Prof. Dr. Sulianti Saroso Jakarta, National Central General Hospital Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo, Jakarta Health Development Policy Agency (BKPK) Laboratory, West Java Regional Health Laboratory, Soetomo Hospital Surabaya, Udayana University Hospital Bali, Ulin Banjarmasin Hospital, and Wahidin Makassar Hospital.

"The Ministry of Health has also issued a Decree of the Director-General of Health and Human Services regarding the Management of Acute Hepatitis in Children with Unknown Cause in Health Service Facilities", he said.

Another effort is to establish a referral hospital for the treatment of patients with acute hepatitis cases in children, such as at H. Adam Malik Hospital Medan, Dr. RSUP. M. Djamin Padang, RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang, Arifin Achmad Hospital Riau, Dr. Zainoel Abidin Aceh.
