Judging Success, XX PON Increases Papua's GDP Up To IDR 1.5 Trillion

JAKARTA— The implementation of the XX PON 2021 in Papua has had a significant impact on the province's economy. The Bank Indonesia Papua Province Representative Office even estimates that the implementation of the national sporting event will bring an increase in GRDP of IDR 950 billion to IDR 1.5 trillion or 0.7 to 1.10 percent of the 2020 ADHK basis.

Head of the Bank Indonesia Papua Province Representative Office, Naek Tigor Sinaga, in a press release in Jayapura, Sunday, October 24, said that the sector that experienced the largest increase was the construction sector with an increase of IDR 778 billion-IDR 926 billion or 4.2-5.0 percent.

"The impact of PON is directly felt by business actors and the general public", he said.

According to Tigor, the wholesale and retail trade sector had a direct impact as reflected in the increase in the Consumer Confidence Index to a level of 142, up from 124 in the second quarter of 2021.

"Furthermore, MSMEs that participate in XX PON is expected to experience an increase in turnover of up to 60 percent", he said.

He explained that the trade sector is estimated to increase by IDR 52 billion – IDR 105 billion, of which the transportation and warehousing sector is estimated to increase by IDR 71 billion- IDR 110 billion or 1.94 percent (YoY) in 2021, which is driven by an increase in the quantity and price of airline tickets.

"The XX 2021 PON has been successfully implemented by the Papua Province, this has had a significant impact and has become a driver of economic recovery in the non-mining sector in Papua", he said.

He added that with the support of better handling of COVID-19, it would be the key to further Papua's economic recovery.
