Anies Says Moving The Capital City Will Not Solve Jakarta's Environmental Problems
JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan views the relocation of the capital city to East Kalimantan, which is planned by President Joko Widodo, will not solve Jakarta's environmental problems.
Anies considers that Jakarta's air pollution and traffic congestion will not be easily controlled if the nation's capital is moved to another island.
This was conveyed by Anies in the virtual discussion of Sinking Cities and The Climate Emergency: Jakarta and Beyond.
"Even if the capital city is moved to Kalimantan, it will not move the problem. Environmental problems are not relocating to Kalimantan. Air pollution is not being relocated to Kalimantan. This is the status of the capital city which is being relocated. We still have to deal with all these problems", said Anies, quoted on Friday, October 1st.
Anies considers that the currently planned relocation of the capital city only moves government activities that were originally centered in Jakarta.

This is because, in fact, government activities only contribute no more than 7 percent of the increase in traffic density in DKI every day.
"So the majority of Jakarta traffic, for number one is household activities. Number two is business", said Anies.
Therefore, the former Minister of Education and Culture said that the DKI Provincial Government will continue to carry out transformations, and pay serious attention to environmental problems.
"And I think this will also move the private sector, the third sector to take the same direction in turning the city into a greener city", said Anies.
