De Gea Performs Brilliantly, Solskjaer Challenges Henderson To Win The Position Of The Main Goalkeeper For Man United
JAKARTA - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer refuses to declare David De Gea as Manchester United's main goalkeeper even though he made a dramatic save against West Ham United. Instead, the coach hopes Dean Henderson will compete again for the position.
De Gea started the season in fine form and earned United a win at the London Stadium against West Ham when he saved Mark Noble's penalty.
Solskjaer has been impressed by De Gea's performance in training after the Spain international opted to return early after the European Cup. But ESPN sources say Henderson is also encouraged to fight for the number one spot.
Solskjaer has been urged by football pundits including Gary Neville to confirm who his first-choice goalkeeper is since Henderson joined the club earlier this season. Sources say the Norwegian coach believes the competition is beneficial for both goalkeepers.
He has already stated De Gea, Henderson and Tom Heaton will play their part during this season.
De Gea will miss the Carabao Cup clash with West Ham at Old Trafford on Wednesday with either Henderson or Heaton starting.
Henderson is back in training after recovering from COVID-19 and has made two appearances for the Under-23s while strengthening his fitness.
He made 26 appearances last season, including 13 in Premier League games. The 24-year-old was included in the England squad for Euro 2020 but was forced to withdraw due to a thigh problem.

The injury did not require surgery and Henderson was expected to play a full role in pre-season, but he tested positive for COVID-19 in July.
Solskjaer will change his line-up during the trip to West Ham in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
The United boss has revealed Jesse Lingard, who scored the 2-1 winner at the London Stadium, will start, while Diogo Dalot, Eric Bailly, Nemanja Matic, Donny van de Beek, Juan Mata, Jadon Sancho, Anthony Elanga, and Anthony Martial are also possibly a starter.
Victor Lindelof is a doubt after missing against West Ham. The Sweden defender played 90 minutes in the Champions League defeat to Young Boys but missed Sunday's league game against West Ham.
