Advanced! Japan Launches Digital COVID Vaccine Certificate, Only For Overseas Travel

JAKARTA - Japan will issue digital COVID-19 vaccination certificates starting in December this year. This was reported by the Nikkei newspaper on Sunday, September 5 today.

The government plans to issue certificates -- which will be used for overseas travel rather than domestic travel -- via QR code scanning via a mobile phone app from mid-December, the Nikkei said without citing sources.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and other cabinet members as reported by Reuters via Antara on Monday will hold a council meeting on the socialization of digital society.

They will decide the government's policy on digital vaccination passports, the newspaper reported.

The Nikkei mentioned that the project will be a priority for Japan's Digital Agency, which just launched this week and focuses on digitizing central and local infrastructure.
