Diarrhea Outbreak In Nigeria, 35 People Died Allegedly Due To Polluted Water Sources

JAKARTA - At least 35 people died from an outbreak of diarrhea in a border town in Borno State, southern Nigeria, officials said on Monday, August 30.

According to Antara, Tuesday, August 31, the outbreak began over the weekend in Gwoza City, Borno State and has so far caused 35 deaths.

As many as 150 people were hospitalized after experiencing symptoms of diarrhea, said local government chief Ibrahim Bukar.

Most of the water sources for border communities have been polluted by carrion, chemicals, and garbage, making it dangerous for human consumption, said Bukar.

The official claims the facilities were destroyed by Boko Haram.

Gwoza is one of the areas in Borno that is frequently attacked by insurgent group.
