Ridwan Kamil's Steps To Overcome The Spike Of COVID-19 And Limited Places

JAKARTA - The West Java Provincial Government has implemented an upstream-downstream pattern to deal with the surge in the number of COVID-19 patients amid the limited isolation rooms available at hospitals.

"In an emergency, West Java carried out an upstream pattern and a downstream pattern to reduce the bed occupancy rate in hospital", said West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil while reviewing the condition of the Regional General Hospital (RSUD) Dr. Slamet Garut, reported by Antara, Friday, June 25.

The man who is familiarly called Kang Emil said the upstream and downstream pattern was to overcome the increase in COVID-19 patients in hospitals, as has now been done in the Greater Bandung area covering the City/Regencies of Bandung and Cimahi.

He explained the upstream pattern, namely patients with mild and moderate symptoms were not immediately taken to the hospital but underwent isolation at home or those that had been provided by the village and regional governments.

"The upstream pattern is like this, so before going to a mild hospital, you don't have to go to the hospital, you just need to be treated here (in the isolation room provided by the village government) because when in Greater Bandung, almost a third of it turned out to be unnecessary in the hospital", he said.

He conveyed that the condition of COVID-19 patients with mild and moderate symptoms did not have to be taken to the hospital for medical treatment so as not to overload the number of beds provided for COVID-19 patients with severe symptoms or requiring emergency treatment.

Furthermore, the downstream pattern, said Kang Emil, is that COVID-19 patients who have undergone treatment in hospitals and then their health conditions have gradually improved can be transferred to isolation places such as hotels, apartments, or flats.

"The downstream pattern is that those who want to recover at the hospital are moved, first transitioned to hotels, apartments, flats or isolation rooms in the region, so that the limited number of beds in hospitals is really for those who need emergency treatment and conditions are more severe", he said.

Regarding the handling in Garut, said Emil, the upstream pattern in handling COVID-19 patients with mild symptoms by first undergoing self-isolation, or in an isolation room that has been implemented by the Jayaraga Village Government.

He hopes that the Garut Regency Government is more optimal in implementing the upstream and downstream pattern so that all people exposed to the COVID-19 outbreak are well served and can reduce the death rate until all of them can be cured.

"We just need to maximize it so that this is an example of five residents living here and recovering. I appreciate Jayaraga who has implemented the upstream pattern, just follow the downstream pattern, coordinate if the residents have recovered, just drag them here", he said.
