Netflix Teams Up With Steven Spielberg's Studio To Create New Movie

JAKARTA - After a dispute, Netflix announced that they had agreed to work with film producer Steven Spielberg to make several original films along with an agreement with production house Amblin Partners to supply several films in the next few years.

The director behind Academy Award-winning feature films such as "ET the Extra-Terrestrial," "Schindler's List" and "Saving Private Ryan" also continues to direct and produce films for Comcast Corp's Universal Pictures under a separate agreement.

"It's clear that we have an incredible opportunity to tell new stories together and reach audiences in new ways", Steven Spielberg said in a statement.

The nomination of the name of the veteran director and producer comes as Netflix competitors such as Amazon and Walt Disney are busy looking for strategies to attract viewers to use their online viewing service.

Steven Spielberg has previously clashed with Netflix in recent years because he argued that films viewed primarily on television should qualify for an Emmy and not an Oscar.

He talked about wanting to preserve the experience of watching movies in theaters.

"My whole life has been spent trying to give something to an audience on a large forum. I love the whole feeling of social interaction outside ... They are the kind of audience I like to talk to", Steven Spielberg said in 2018.

Netflix plans to release more than 70 films this year, sending some of their films to theaters for limited viewing.

The company operates the world's largest streaming service with nearly 209 million subscribers worldwide.

Amblin Partners has also produced several films apart from the film directed by Steven Spielberg. Recent Amblin projects include the 2018 best film winner "Green Book" and the 2019 First World War drama "1917," both distributed by Universal.
