Through School Waste Management Program, AMMAN Receives Highest Honor at Lestari Awards 2026

JAKARTA - An innovative approach that connects environmental education with the circular economy has earned PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara (AMMAN)—one of Indonesia’s largest copper and gold mining companies—the highest recognition in the Waste Management category at the Lestari Awards 2026. The award was presented for AMMAN’s School Waste Management Program (PPSS), which serves as a catalyst for advancing the circular economy.

Through this environmental initiative, elementary and junior high school students in West Sumbawa Regency are encouraged to develop a strong sense of environmental stewardship and learn that waste is not merely something to be discarded, but a resource that can be managed, utilized, and transformed into value for both the environment and the community.

Priyo Pramono, AMMAN’s Vice President of Policy & Permitting and Social Impact, stated that through the PPSS program, AMMAN seeks to strengthen the role of schools as centers for knowledge transformation and behavioral change.

“Through this program, AMMAN is helping to build an ecosystem that nurtures future generations who are environmentally responsible. The success of PPSS is reflected not only in the volume of waste managed, but also in the growing awareness that waste has value when managed properly. As this understanding takes root among students, teachers, and families, its impact extends beyond schools and into the wider community,” he said.

The PPSS program integrates education, infrastructure, and circular economy principles. Teachers incorporate waste management into classroom learning, while students gain hands-on experience managing waste through the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle). As a result, schools are evolving into environmental learning hubs that actively engage families and local communities.

In practice, students and teachers separate organic waste, which is then processed at the School Composting House (RUMPOS) to produce POSTA (Our School’s Organic Fertilizer). The compost is utilized for school needs, community projects, agriculture, and even land reclamation activities within AMMAN’s operational areas.

Measurable Impact

Since its launch in 2022, PPSS has expanded from two pilot schools to six active participating schools, engaging thousands of students, teachers, parents, and community members, with support from dozens of AMMAN employee volunteers.

Between 2022 and 2025, the program successfully managed more than 150 tonnes of organic waste and produced over 50 tonnes of POSTA compost, while preventing approximately 11 tonnes of emissions in 2025 alone. PPSS also achieved a Social Return on Investment (SROI) of 4.09, meaning that every IDR 1 invested generated IDR 4.09 in social, economic, and environmental value.

The program’s success has inspired independent replication by schools beyond the original initiative, without financial support from AMMAN. Several partner schools have also earned Adiwiyata Awards at both the provincial and national levels, reinforcing that PPSS has established sustainable environmental management practices while fostering a strong culture of environmental responsibility within the education sector.

For AMMAN, this award serves as recognition of the collective efforts and collaboration among students, teachers, families, local governments, implementation partners, employees, and communities in driving meaningful change—starting from the school environment and extending to society at large.
