Pay MRT Using Nirsentuh, Pramono: Passengers No Longer Need to Fill the Balance

JAKARTA - MRT Jakarta passengers can now directly enter and exit the station using a contactless credit card or EMV Contactless without having to buy a travel card or top up the balance first.

The new payment system was launched by the Governor of DKI Jakarta Pramono Anung at the Bundaran HI Station. This feature is the first to be implemented in public transportation services in Indonesia.

Through this system, users simply tap in and tap out using a contactless credit card supported by the Visa and Mastercard networks.

"Today, the ticket payment system using contactless credit cards or EMV Contactless in MRT Jakarta is officially launched. This is the first in Indonesia, so people can immediately use credit cards such as Visa and Mastercard without having to buy a special card," said Pramono, Wednesday, July 29.

The presence of an EMV Contactless-based payment system is one of the DKI Provincial Government's efforts to expand public transportation access. In addition to cutting the ticket purchase process, this service also targets tourists who come to Jakarta and want to use the MRT without having to buy a local electronic card.

Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) DKI Jakarta recorded more than 2.5 million foreign tourists visited Jakarta throughout 2024. With this new system, tourists can directly use the credit card they have to access MRT services.

Pramono assessed that transaction convenience is one of the important factors in supporting Jakarta's position as a global city. According to him, a similar system has been implemented in various major cities in the world.

"As a global city, Jakarta must be on par with cities that have implemented this system. This will provide convenience and become an attraction for tourists visiting Jakarta," said Pramono.

The implementation of EMV Contactless is the result of collaboration between the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government, Bank Indonesia, PT MRT Jakarta, Bank Mandiri, Mastercard, Visa, and a number of national banks.

In the future, the contactless payment system is not only targeted to apply to the Jakarta MRT. The DKI Provincial Government also encourages the integration of payment on other public transportation modes so that transfers between modes can be carried out through one transaction system.

"I hope that in the future this system will not only be used in the Jakarta MRT, but also in the Jakarta LRT, Transjakarta, Transjabodetabek, to the LRT built by the central government. That way, the public and tourists can switch modes of transportation through one integrated payment system," said Pramono.
