Beware Of 'Holiday Heart Syndrome', Heart Diseases That Appear During Year-End Holidays
JAKARTA - December is a month that many people have been waiting for, because it is the end of the year and the holiday period for Christmas and the turn of the year. However, at these fun moments, everyone must continue to pay attention to their health because they will be prone to holiday heart syndrome.
Quoted from Huffpost, on Thursday, December 11, 2025, the holiday heart syndrome is a temporary heart rhythm (arithmia), which occurs due to habits that are carried out during holidays, especially during holidays at the end of the year.
"Heart syndrome during holidays refers to heart rhythm disorders, namely arrhythmia," said one director of the Center for Cardiovascular Imaging Research at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Ahmed Tawakol.
Habits during holidays that can cause holiday heart syndrome are excessive eating and tend to be processed food, increasing alcohol consumption, to different routines from everyday life, such as late sleep until bedtime is not well fulfilled.
One of these habits that has a very significant impact on the holiday heart disease is excessive alcohol consumption. This can happen to anyone, both healthy and who already has a previous risk of heart disease.
"Already having a tendency for heart disease, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea may be at higher risk during these excessive alcohol drinking times," said Dr. Mrin Shetty, director of the Women's Heart Program at the University of Louisville.

In general, someone who has a holiday heart syndrome can recover by itself within 24 to 48 hours. However, it is necessary to be aware that this condition can increase the risk of developing long-term heart problems, ranging from heart attacks, strokes, to blood clots.
"In some cases, heart syndrome while on vacation can heal by itself within 24 to 48 hours, but it's important to understand that it can increase the risk of long-term heart problems, especially if these arrhythmias become more frequent or permanent," Shetty continued.
Therefore, it is recommended for everyone to maintain a diet and life even though they are on a fun year-end holiday. Keep consuming healthy foods, avoid alcohol, to hydrate the body properly.
