Spanish PM: Genocide Perpetrators In Gaza Must Be Accounted For

JAKARTA - Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Wednesday that those responsible for the destruction in Gaza must face justice, insisting true peace requires accountability when welcoming Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on an official visit.

Speaking at the La Moncloa Palace on Human Rights Day, PM Sanchez described the occasion as very symbolic, noting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, stressing that human dignity is an "unconditional, unique and non-negotiable value."

PM Sanchez warned that the ceasefire had not ended the suffering of civilians (in the Gaza Strip).

"Even to this day, after the ceasefire (declared), Palestinians in Gaza are still suffering attacks. We need true peace," he said as quoted by Anadolu (11/12).

"Those responsible for this genocide must be held accountable," said PM Sanchez.

Medical sources confirmed on Wednesday that the death toll in the Gaza Strip had risen to 70,369, the majority of children and women, since the start of the Israeli attack on October 7, 2023, quoted from WAFA.

The same source explained that the number of injured victims had risen to 171,069 since the start of the attack, while a number of victims were still trapped under the rubble, inaccessible to ambulances and rescue teams.

Meanwhile, the total number of deaths and injuries since the ceasefire agreement on October 10, 2025 has reached 379, while 992 others have been injured and 627 bodies have been found.

PM Sanchez said 2025 "has been a terrible year for the Palestinian people," with nine of the 10 houses in Gaza now uninhabitable and "ribs of lives and families" destroyed.

Citing UN estimates of more than 50 million tonnes of debris across the region, Sanchez said physical reconstruction would eventually be possible, but the greater challenge is "how to rebuild hope" and ensure that peace is more than just a "short interval between wars."

The Spanish prime minister called on the international community to "express its opinion" to ensure the suffering of Palestinians is not forgotten. He reiterated that the ceasefire must be real and not "fictitious", and again stressed that attacks on civilians should end.

He also reaffirmed Spain's commitment to the Two-State Solution and outlined three priorities: ensuring the Palestinian crisis does not disappear from public awareness, supporting the Palestinian Authority in forming future governments, and coordinating with European, Arab, and international partners to establish security conditions that could "end violence forever."

He added that the Spanish public was "completely touched" by the destruction of Gaza and strongly supported the recognition of the Palestinian State.

PM Sanchez concluded that Spain and Palestine "will always walk hand in hand," and expressed hope President Abbas's visit would help build bridges, find solutions within the framework of international law, and strengthen relations between countries.

It is known that Spain, where support for the Palestinian cause is very strong, has become one of the most vocal countries to criticize Israel's genocide war in Gaza since October 7, 2023.
