China Opens Up If Figures From Japan Come To Improve Relations

JAKARTA - The Chinese government has declared open to the arrival of figures or organizations from Japan who want to help improve relations between the two countries, amid the heated situation due to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's statement about Taiwan.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said many broad-minded figures in Japan were concerned about the negative impacts and serious consequences of Takaichi's statement. He hopes related organizations in Japan can take on a more positive role.

The statement came after the Japan-China Friendship Parliament Association and IIDANREN (Japan Business Federation) expressed a desire to visit China in the near future. KEDIDAREN had previously met Prime Minister Li Qiang and Trade Minister Wang Wentao in January 2024, during their first visit after four years.

China urged Japan to do introspection and correct mistakes by withdrawing Takaichi's false statement. Lin Jian asked Japan to stop hurting the feelings of the two nations and take concrete steps to fulfill its political commitment to China and create conditions that allow normal exchanges.

According to Lin Jian, PM Takaichi's statement regarding Taiwan openly opposed the results of World War II, postwar international order, and violated the UN Charter.

He emphasized that China had sent a letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations regarding the statement, which Japan's Permanent Representative to the United Nations responded to. In the reply, Japan said its defense policy was a completely defense-oriented passive strategy and Takaichi's remarks reflected this attitude.

Lin Jian considered that the Japanese letter was full of wrong views. He questioned what was actually meant by Japan's 'consistent position' regarding the Taiwan issue, because according to him Tokyo never gave a direct answer. He reiterated that Taiwan is Chinese territory, and the resolution of the issue is an internal matter that should not be interfered with by any party.

He also alluded to Takaichi's statement linking Japan's survival threatening situation' to Taiwan contingent implies potential use of force against China.

Japan is also considered to be trying to divert issues by accusing other countries of defense development and coercive actions. Lin Jian said Japan's far-right group never stopped trying to whiten the history of its aggression.

On that basis, China's Permanent Representative at the United Nations has sent a reply that reiterated Beijing's firm position against Japan's efforts to reverse the course of history.

Lin Jian added that every external force that interferes with the affairs of the Taiwan Strait will face a firm response from China.

Tensions between the two countries have risen since early November 2025, after PM Takaichi stated the use of China's military force against Taiwan could lead to a situation that threatens Japan's survival. The statement was interpreted as a signal of the possible involvement of Japan's Self-Defense Forces in Taiwan-related scenarios.

China then took a series of countermeasures, such as suspending imports of Japanese marine products, canceling high-ranking officials' meetings, suggesting citizens not to travel or study in Japan, stopping Japanese film releases, and pledging to respond firmly if Tokyo engages militarily in Taiwan affairs.

In addition to speaking in parliament, PM Takaichi also communicated by telephone with United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday (26/11).

Media reported Trump smoothly advised Takaichi not to provoke China into the issue of Taiwan's sovereignty.

Trump is also said to have received an explanation of the domestic political constraints Takaichi is facing and understands he may not be fully able to withdraw a statement that angers Beijing.

The conversation came a day after Trump spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping amid rising tensions between Beijing and Tokyo over Taiwan.
