Five Children In Riau Died Of Babi Flu, These Are Symptoms To Watch Out For
JAKARTA - Five children in Datai Hamlet, Batang Gansal District, Indragiri Hulu Regency, Riau, died after being infected with the Influenza A / H1pdm09 virus or known as swine flu. These findings trigger concerns and serve as an important reminder to the public about the dangers of respiratory diseases that are easily transmitted, especially in children.
This case stems from a surge in Acute Respiratory Channel Infections (ARI) that hit 224 residents in the hamlet. Although all the sufferers have now recovered, laboratory examinations show that the five children who died were infected with H1N1 and Haemophilus influenzae. Bad environmental conditions, ranging from the absence of MCK, minimal ventilation of houses, to exposure to firewood every day, are strongly suspected to exacerbate transmission.
The Director of Health Surveillance and Quarantine of the Ministry of Health, Sumarjaya, explained that environmental factors are the main cause of the rapid transmission of disease in the area. According to him, dense houses, poor hygiene, and low nutritional status make children more vulnerable.

"Situations like this make respiratory diseases more easily transmitted, especially in toddlers. If sanitation and daily habits are not improved, incidents like this can be repeated," he said, quoted from the Ministry of Health's website.
Experts warn H1N1 flu has symptoms similar to common colds, but can develop faster and more severe, especially in young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and people with chronic diseases. Reporting from the Mayo Clinic page, how many general symptoms of swine flu include:
- Fever (although sometimes it doesn't appear)
- Muscle pain
- Milling and sweating
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Nose stuffy or runny
- Red and runny eyes
- Headache
- Lemas dan cepat lelah
- Vomit and diarrhea (more often in children)
Symptoms usually appear 1 4 days after someone is exposed to the virus. If the child shows signs of danger such as shortness of breath, blue skin, seizures, or unable to drink, parents must immediately seek medical help.
The H1N1 virus spreads through air splashes when people infected cough, sneezing, or talking. The virus can also move through the hand that touches the contaminated surface. It is important to note that the swine flu is not contagious from the consumption of pork.
Experts emphasize that the best prevention is annual flu vaccination. In addition, simple steps such as washing hands, covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing, wearing a mask when sick, and maintaining environmental cleanliness can help reduce transmission.
The Ministry of Health together with local governments are now conducting mass treatment, strengthening nutrition interventions, and providing supplementary vitamins and food for toddlers and pregnant women. The health team also took additional samples to ensure no other pathogens were circulating.
In the long term, the government has begun to prepare improvements to sanitation, waste disposal, and sustainable health education for school residents and the community. Sumarjaya emphasized that environmental improvement is the key.
"We want to break the cycle of vulnerability. Environmental and nutritional intervention must be carried out so that incidents like this do not happen again," he said.
