13 Affected Areas, West Sumatra 'Full Alert' Facing Floods And Landslides

The West Sumatra Provincial Government (West Sumatra) has declared a disaster emergency response status from November 25 to December 8, 2025 after a series of hydrometeorological disasters hit various regions in the province.

"The West Sumatra Provincial Government has officially established an emergency response status for natural disasters due to extreme weather that has hit a number of areas in the last few days," said West Sumatra Provincial Secretary (Sekda) Arry Yuswandi in Padang City, Antara, Wednesday, November 26.

This determination is contained in the Governor's Decree Number 360-761-2025 concerning the Determination of the Emergency Response Status for Floods, Flash Floods, Landslides, and Strong Winds in West Sumatra Province 2025.

Arry explained that the decision was taken because 13 districts/cities in West Sumatra were affected by the disaster, so swift and coordinated steps were needed at the provincial level.

Previously, the five areas most significantly affected Padang Pariaman Regency, Agam Regency, Pesisir Selatan Regency, and Bukittinggi City had already established an emergency response status.

He added that the provincial emergency response status ensures that all regional apparatus can move faster and more flexible in handling, including logistics mobilization, heavy equipment, and human resources. This status is also the basis for proposing Ready-to-Use Funds from BNPB.

During the emergency response period, the West Sumatra Provincial Government set seven priority handling: rapid assessment of the situation and needs of the field, activation of the disaster emergency handling command system, preparation of operations plans based on contingency plans, emergency community evacuation, fulfillment of basic needs, protection of vulnerable groups, and control of sources of disaster threats and distribution of logistical assistance.
