Gus Yahya's Release Is Called For The Sake Of Maintaining The Marwah Of PBNU

JAKARTA The coordinator of the Gus Dur Santri Alliance, Muhamad Sholihin, said that the decision of the PBNU Sharia Daily Meeting which demanded the resignation of Yahya Cholil Staquf (Gus Yahya) was in accordance with the demands they had voiced since one year ago.

"The decision is proof that the criticism we express is not without basis. One year ago we voiced that Gus Yahya resign. Today it is proven that what we have criticized and feared so far is true," he said, Sunday, November 23.

According to him, Rais Aam PBNU's decision is a reflection of the aspirations of the students who want NU's dignity to be maintained.

This is because the important decision was taken to ensure that PBNU does not fall into practices or policies that are considered contrary to the values of Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah an-Nahdliyah.

"The firmness of PBNU's Syuriah in enforcing organizational regulations must be appreciated. We hope that this process will be a momentum for improving the structure and governance of PBNU," Sholihin said.

As is known, the decision to ask Gus Yahya to resign did not appear without reason.

In the minutes of the meeting attended by 37 of the 53 Sharia Daily Executives, a number of crucial points were discussed, including institutional evaluation and the dynamics of regeneration in the PBNU environment.

One of the highlights is the use of resource persons associated with the International Zionism network at the NU National Leadership Academy (AKN NU).

Syuriyah considered this contrary to Aswaja's values and teachings and was not in line with Muqaddimah Qanun Asasi NU. Moreover, the issue arose amid international condemnation of Israel's actions in Palestine.

The meeting also considered that the implementation of the NU AKN fulfilled the elements of Article 8 letter a of the NU Association Regulation Number 13 of 2025, which allowed dishonorable dismissal for functionaries deemed to defame the organization.

In addition, financial governance within PBNU was also highlighted. The meeting stated indications of violations of shara law, state regulations, Article 97'99 of the NU Household Budget, as well as a number of other internal regulations.

This condition is seen as potentially dangerous for the existence of the association's legal entity.
