Sinergi Lintas Sektor Kunci Cegah Cemaran Radioaktif

JAKARTA The urgency to update the nuclear regulation is considered increasingly urgent as the threat pattern and the need for supervision of the security of radioactive materials develop.

Director of Nuclear Engineering and Preparedness (DKKN) BAPETEN, Yudi Pramono, explained that Law Number 10 of 1997 no longer fully accommodates the current situation and challenges, especially regarding aspects of preventing abuse in the context of national security.

The threat of misuse of radioactive material continues to grow. More assertive and adaptive rules are needed so that supervision, prevention, and prosecution can run consistently and measurably," said Yudi in a statement received, Sunday, November 9.

In the field, BAPETEN continues to strengthen the detection, identification, control, and decontamination capabilities. In handling allegations of radioactive contamination in the Cikande industrial area, the technical team implemented layered security procedures: redevalment of exposure levels, localization of materials so as not to move, and gradual restoration of environmental safety levels.

"Restriction activities do not stop at the discovery stage. Areas must fully recover before being declared safe, without leaving any residual risks," said Yudi.

He also emphasized the importance of increasing cross-sectoral synergies. BAPETEN's coordination with technical ministries, law enforcement officials, industry players, research institutions, and local governments is said to be a differentiating factor in the effectiveness of early detection and rapid response.

"Prevention will only be successful if all parties have a commitment and share information with each other. Synergy is the key so that the contamination case like before does not happen again," he added.
