Wounds Left Open Can Accelerate Healing, Myth Or Fact?
JAKARTA - The public's understanding of the handling of wounds, whether small or superficial or internal injuries, is still often wrong. One of them is a claim that leaving the wound open can make it recover faster.
Chairman of the Association of Indonesian Surgeon Experts (PABI), dr. Heri Setyanto, Sp.B, FINACS, emphasized that the claim that the wound is left open can speed up the healing is not true.
This is because by leaving the wound open, it allows germs to stick more easily. This condition will even slow down the healing process and disrupt skin regeneration.
"The reality is that if the wound is open, it becomes the entry point for germs. The wound healing will also take longer, because with dryness the flow of blood into the wound is disturbed, the regeneration of skin formation will also be disrupted," said Doctor Heri in the Central Jakarta area, on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.
"So it's not true that the wound is left open and recovered quickly," he added.
Therefore, Doctor Heri recommends the use of plaster to treat wounds in the community. The use of plaster can protect wounds from germs and maintain moisture so that new skin decomposition is not disturbed.
Use the right plaster to protect the wound so that germs are not disturbed. It is also important to maintain moisture so that the formation of new skin is not disturbed," he explained.
