BPOM Finds 15 Illegal Drug Products, Herbal Diet To Stamina Coffee Containing Prohibited Chemicals
JAKARTA - The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) has reiterated its commitment to maintaining public safety by uncovering 15 natural medicinal products (OBA) that are circulating illegally and are proven to contain illegal medicinal chemicals (BKO).
These findings are not just administrative violations, but serious risks resembling hidden viruses, threatening public health, causing economic impacts, and weakening consumer protection as part of national sovereignty.
Supervision carried out by BPOM in September 2025 includes sampling and testing 1,639 OBA products, quasi-medications, and health supplements (SK) throughout Indonesia. The BPOM laboratory ensures that 15 products of these samples contain BKO.
The results of tracing registration data, production facilities, and distribution show that all identified products do not have an official distribution permit number (NIE) from BPOM. Some of them include fake NIE.
These illegal products generally claim to be a slowing drug, a men's stamina-boosting product, or a linu sore drug. Of the 15 products, five slowing drugs are proven to contain sibutramin, five male stamina products containing cyldenafil citrates, and five linu legislative products containing decsametasons, paracetamol, mephenamate acid, ibuprofen, and sodium diclofnak.
The use of BKO in OBA is very risky because this kind of drug must be consumed according to dose and medical supervision. For example, sibutramin has the potential to cause cardiovascular disorders, mental disorders, liver problems, and insomnia.
Its use in OBA has been banned in many countries. Cydenability abused in herbal products for men can cause unstable blood pressure, heart problems, to death if consumed without supervision.
In addition, the desametason found in linu sore products is a strong corticosteroid that can reduce endurance, cause osteoporosis, hormonal disorders, and damage to the liver and kidneys if used carelessly.
BPOM also noted reports from the authorities of medicine and food for Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore in the period July September 2025. Through the ASEAN Post Marketing Alert System (ASEAN PMAS), the three countries reported seven OBA products containing BKO circulating in their area.
This product includes four male stamina products containing sildenafil and/or tadalafil, as well as three itching treatment products containing mikonaZol, chlorbetasol, or methyl salicilat. The Head of BPOM Taruna Ikrar expressed his concern.
"The addition of BKO in natural ingredients-based products is not just a violation, but a sabotage of the public health system. These products disguise themselves as herbal herbs or supplements even though they contain harmful drug active substances," he said, quoted from the official BPOM website.
The cadets emphasized that BPOM will continue to strengthen supervision through sampling, testing, and tracing distribution and production chains to take firm action against irresponsible parties.
BPOM also follows up on OBA's production and circulation activities containing BKO by unauthorized parties. If criminal indications are found, BPOM Civil Servant Investigators (PPNS) will process it pro-justitia.
"BPOM will take firm action against business actors who deliberately add BKO to natural medicinal products. Perpetrators who are proven to produce and distribute illegal products will be subject to criminal sanctions in accordance with the provisions of Article 435 Jo. Article 138 paragraph (2) and (3) Law Number 17 of 2023 concerning Health, with a maximum imprisonment of 12 years or a maximum fine of IDR 5 billion," he added.
BPOM reminds the public to always check the distribution permit number (NIE) on product packaging and be aware of instant claims or rapid effects.
"People are the last bastion in maintaining the health and sovereignty of the nation. Don't be easily tempted by unreasonable promotions and don't let illegal products damage our bodies, our economy, and the future of our generation." concluded the Head of BPOM.
