Established Since 2001, PLTP Lahendong Becomes The Only Geothermal Power Plant In Madya City

TOMOHON - The Lahendong Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) located in Tomohon, North Sulawesi is still the only geothermal plant located in the middle city. Just so you know, the geothermal power plant, which has been operating since 2001, is an electrical source that supports the electricity of the North Sulawesi and Gorontalo (Sulutgo) regions.

"Lahendong is also very unique compared to others, because there are geothermal plants in middle cities. So throughout Indonesia, which belongs to PLN and the private sector, PLTP generators are not in middle cities, all are in districts or sub-districts, in villages like that. For the city of Tomohonto itself, PLTP Lahendong is still in the middle city of Tomohon," said PLTP Lahendong Electricity Service Unit Manager PLN IP, HSM Saragih, quoted Friday, October 30.

In terms of capacity, the PLTP, located in North Sulawesi Province, has a capacity of 4x20 Mega Watt (MW) or a total of 80 MW. This PLTP supplies around 18 percent of the total electricity capacity of the North Sulawesi system and has a peak load of 490 MW.

PLTP Lahendong Units 1 and 2 are located in Tomohon Selatan District, Tondangow Village, while units 3 and 4 are located in South Tomohon District, Pangolombian Village.

The development of the Lahendong PLTP began with the geothermal exploration phase which took place from 1994 to 1996 and the construction of Unit 1 began from 1996 to 2001. The Commercial Operation Date or date of commercial operation took place on August 21, 2001, then the COD PLTP Lahendong 2 was carried out on June 17, 2007.

"Unit 2 has been operating since 2007, unit 3 in 2009, and unit 4 in 2011. Everything is still fully operational to supply the North Sulawesi system," Saragih explained.

In terms of contributing to emission reduction, the electricity generated by PLTP Lahendong has been certified Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) to support the beyond kwH program.

"PLTP Lahendong itself has played a very important role in reducing emissions, meaning that Lahendong is certified by REC, Renewable Energy Certificate," he said.
