BRIN Targets The Birth Of 4,000 Talents Of Science And Technology Per 1 Million Residents By 2045
JAKARTA The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) announced that the government is now targeting the presence of 4,000 talents of science and technology (Iptek) per one million population in 2045.
This number has increased from the previous 1,400 talents. The birth target of this new talent is also in line with Presidential Regulation Number 108 of 2024 concerning the Great Design of National Talent Management.
BRIN Deputy for Facilitation of Research and Innovation Agus Haryono stated that Indonesia's position in the 2025 Global Innovation Index (GII) was ranked 55th. Compared to last year, Indonesia's ranking fell one level.
According to Agus, this is based on the low level of research spending from the private sector. Currently, private contributions only reach 15 percent of the total national research spending. When compared to developed countries, private contributions are in the range of 70 to 80 percent.
With this low total expenditure, the government is targeting an increase in private research investment by 35 percent by 2029. This investment is believed to be the main driver of national innovation.
"If BRIN and universities continue to research, but the industry does not participate in innovation, then Indonesian products will find it difficult to compete in the global market," Agus said, launching from the official BRIN website on Friday, October 31.

In addition to funding, the lack of Human Resources (HR) of science and technology in the industrial sector is also an obstacle. Currently, there are only 2.6 percent of science and technology human resources working in the industry, while the rest are dominated by government and academic institutions.
To face this challenge, BRIN offers collaborative programs to bridge laboratories and industry. The program is Degree by Research which allows researchers in the industry to continue graduate studies.
Researchers can develop products while earning a master's degree or doctorate with the guidance of professors from campus. BRIN also provides open research funding that can be accessed by various groups. This program is here to advance science and technology innovation.
