Russian Diplomat Says European Union Is Trying To Disrupt Ukraine Peace Efforts Ahead Of Putin-Trump Meeting

JAKARTA - The European Union has turned to "an active subversive effort" ahead of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US President Donald Trump, with the aim of disrupting peace efforts in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

"We, of course, saw and heard what was happening around the perimeter because of a misunderstanding about what was going on. The European Union and the aggressive Western European community have turned to what they call active subversive actions," Zakharova told TASS as quoted October 20.

"Once again, there are statements and threats," he said.

"We understand what they want to do. I mean, the Western European community is driven by America's previous ultra-liberal attitude. Of course, they want to interfere with any peaceful aspirations, from talks about peace negotiations to concrete actions," Zakharova continued.

Last week, Hongari Prime Minister Viktor Orban said the conflict in Ukraine should have been over long ago if EU leaders had not encouraged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to continue hostilities and hinder President Trump's mediation efforts.

"Obviously they are trying to increase the conflict as they did in 2022 by disrupting the peace negotiations requested by the Kyiv regime, which are possible by our country," he said.

"They have been doing this for years, periodically covering up their actions with statements about the alleged peace and alleged peace initiatives. In fact, they are doing everything they can to increase the conflict. It is difficult to say how much they are aware of what they are doing, given the large number of unprofessionals responsible for all these Western European countries. These people are less professional in terms of education, experience, and calls," he said.
