Kemendikdasmen Mandatory English At SD Mulai TA 2027/2028
JAKARTA - The Ministry of Elementary and Secondary Education (Kemendikdasmen) is ready to require English subjects at the elementary school education level in the 2027/2028 school year to grow global communication capabilities from an early age.
Minister of Basic and Secondary Education (Mendikdasmen) Abdul Mu'ti stated that English will be a compulsory subject starting from the 2027/2028 school year because it is a form of the Government's commitment to prepare a profile of graduates who are productive and globally competitive.
By instilling English skills from an early age, Indonesia affirms its commitment to forming a generation of graduates who are not only superior at the national level, but also have competitiveness at the global level.
On a different occasion, the Head of the Standard, Curriculum and Education Assessment (BSKAP) of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Toni Toharudin, added that this policy was not new.
"Actually, including English as a compulsory subject, not a process that has just been carried out suddenly, the transition process has been listed in Article 33 of the Regulation of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Permendikbudristek) Number 12 of 2024 concerning Curriculum in Early Childhood Education, Basic Education Levels, and Secondary Education Levels. Then continued with the Regulation of the Minister of Basic and Secondary Education Number 13 of 2025 concerning Amendments to Regulations of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology Number 12 of 2024," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, October 16.
The Ministry of Education and Culture hopes that policies regarding the mandatory English language at the elementary level can be an important momentum in improving the quality of basic education in Indonesia.
"Through early mastery of international languages, students are expected to be able to develop cross-cultural communication capabilities, expand global insight, and foster confidence in facing future challenges," said Toni.
