Drone Allegedly From Hungary Violates Ukrainian Airspace

JAKARTA - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said reconnaissance drones violated Ukrainian airspace. It is suspected that the drone flew from Hungary to examine potential industries in the western border region.

Hungary is a member of the European Union and NATO, two organizations allied with Kyiv in Russia's war in Ukraine, but relations between Kyiv and Budapest are often tense.

"I instruct all available information to be verified and urgent reports must be made regarding any recorded incidents," Zelenskyy said.

After the Russian invasion in February 2022, many of Ukraine's major industrial companies, mainly from the east and south, moved to western Ukraine and other safer regions of the country.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is skeptical of Western military assistance to Ukraine and has maintained closer ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin compared to other NATO and European Union member countries.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Kyiv had imposed entry bans for three high-ranking Hungarian military officials in response to a previous entry ban imposed by Hungary against Ukrainian military officials.

Ukraine is home to about 150,000 Hungarians, mostly living in the Transcript region on the border with Hungary.

The Hungarian and Kyiv governments often clash over the community's language rights.
